Disney World Tips when taking Kids

We just got back from our first Disney World vacation and before I forget all the tips and tricks I learned I thought I would blog it out for all to see!

After this post I will give pros and cons to each day we had so you can see our schedule of what worked and what we would do different but for now I'll start with ten tips.

Tip 1 - STAY AT A DISNEY RESORT
It was awesome to park the van and have bus or monorail transportation everywhere we went.  Staying on property also gave us extra hours in the park on certain days, refillable drink cups, magic bands, and it also gave us the Disney quality service all day/night every day/night.

Tip 2 - PLAN AHEAD
I started planning our trip about a year before we went and found the BEST asset and now someone I call friend Skye Durrer of Mickey Travels check her out on Facebook.  I am overly analytical to say the least so I read a lot, found maps online, got touring plans, got a list of rides our one year old could ride (which is a lot), and I complied a spreadsheet to keep everything all on one page for our entire trip.  All the time planning allowed us to reserve restaurants we wanted to eat at 180 days prior to going plus plan our fastpasses that let us skip very long lines to do the top things on our list.  Planning really paid off because our time was extremely enjoyable the entire trip!

Tip 3 - GET FASTPASSES
If you don't want to walk around in heat with a four year old and one year old aimlessly wandering then waiting in a line for 20 minutes to 3 hours (yes I said hours) get a fastpass for rides you want to do.  You get three possibly four per day and they are a life and time saver to keep little ones excited not cranky.  We had very happy good babies all week!!

Tip 4 - JUST SAY YES TO THE DINING PLAN
With little ones it is good to give them time to sit and eat especially for dinner.  In Disney talk that means unless you want to blow the bank you should get a dining plan we compared prices and we did save money a lot of money because each dinner was around $100 or more each night then lunches were around $40 plus we ate around $15-$20 in snacks per day.  ALL of that was included in our dining plan.  In Disney talk we got one table service credit, one snack credit, and one quick service credit per night of stay so for us it was 6 of each per person since we stayed 6 nights and 7 days.  We ate breakfast in our room each morning except one where we used a table service credit at crystal palace.  That gave the kids more wake up time each morning.  Again happy tummy equal happy babies!!!

Tip 5 - GET TO THE PARKS AT OPENING TIME
Several mornings it felt like we had the parks to ourselves and got to ride popular rides multiple times for no waiting  so it paid to wake up early.  It also helped the kids because they got excited and took a good nap in the afternoon as we traveled to our dinner reservation.

Tip 6 - MAKE DINNER RESERVATIONS
We got to experience some very tasty dinners at wonderful restaurants by booking dinner reservations!  They also allowed us to take in more of disney's quality service because they are on top of any need you might have at their specialty restaurants.  All of the greats are covered under the dining plan only gratuity isn't which isn't a big deal to factor into your budget.

Tip 7 - PLAN TO DO PENNY PRESSES
I read on a blog about the many different penny presses in the parks plus hotel and it paid off BIG!!!  Our four year old loved making his penny and would pass up a fit for a $40 toy to get a new penny! It took some prep work but was well well worth the extra work because it saved us time plus meltdowns in the MANY MANY gift shops because we always said yes to getting something in each gift shop!  It costs $0.50 but so worth it!!  Read how to prep and what we did here: http://www.themouseforless.com/downloads/DisneyPressedCoinsChecklists.shtml

Tip 8 - BRING SNACKS AND WATER
Disney will allow you to bring in drinks and food in a soft cooler or ziplock bag and bringing your own saves $2.50 for a bottle of water that is easy to carry.  You can get free water at quick service restaurants but they are difficult to carry plus a few tasted a little weird so we carried one water bottle to put those in that had a carbon filter by Brita and a cup for the one year old then one bottle of water.  It was great if we were in a line or needed a distraction to pull out a snack and drink.

Tip 9 - PACK KIDS CLOTHES IN ZIPLOCK BAGS
I packed the kids clothes in ziplock bags and labeled what day the outfits were to be worn.  Sounds crazy but it saves looking for clothes when you are tired the kids are tired and you want to be at the bus stop ASAP.  It made mornings and nights soooo much easier because you grab a bag and have all you needed in a hurry.

Tip 10 - MARK YOUR STROLLER
Leaving your stroller in stroller parking is awesome and always felt safe because lots of the locations had Disney cast members watching over them.  They also move them and in a crowd of hundreds of strollers it was great and easy to find ours because we had a sign on ours.  We never had any question where our stroller was because our sign was easy to see.

Lots more information to come but these are the big tips for now!
